Rigged review? April 29, 2006 This book is just too outdated to be of any practical use, but that's not the point of this review.
The funny thing i want to point out is about all the other reviewers who gave this book a 5-star rating.
Of course, i believe a few of them really think this is a good title; but the majority of them are just fake users to push the rating up. You think im kidding? just click on the "see all reviews from this reviewer" button for each of those reviewers, and you'll see that for most of them, his/her ratings for all books are 5-star. I can hardly believe this fact. The only reasonably conclusion is that these are fake readers created by some charlatans to boost the ratings of some select titles.
Not worth the purchase price - that's for sure... April 20, 2005 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The e-commerce industry is a fast moving industry and this book just doesn't seem to be able to keep up.
While reading this book, I kept thinking to myself - "wow, that is really old..." the authors kept discussing old strategies... and old technologies... I guess Microsoft's .NET technologies (ADO.NET, ASP.NET, Commerce Server, BizTalk Server, etc.) were just too new to be included by the time of re-print. I think not, .NET was first introduced in early 2000 this is a 2004 copyrighted book.
To continue that thought, this book is definitely slanted away from any Microsoft technologies comments like "Unfortunately, the fate of ODBC is completely under the control of Microsoft" (P.189) is mis-guided and ill informed statement.
Chapter two - Types of e-Commerce Technology, reads like a datasheet/white paper for IBM white paper for IBM.
This book also misses the mark in providing a framework for setting up a complete e-commerce and/or e-business system. You get bits and pieces, but there is no coordinating highlevel framework or strategy to use.
I am not saying there is no value to the book... For me, the bottom line is the age of the content - if a good amount of the content is too old, is it worth the money?
I don't think so...
  E-commerce November 6, 2003 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The world of e-commerce has been flipped upside down in the past couple of years, and this book does a great job of capturing the change and getting anyone up to speed who has been out of the picture or just wants to fill in the blanks. It's easy to read, points to many resources available, is categorized in a way that makes sense and helped me quickly find the information I needed to write a winning e-commerce proposal, even though I'd been out of that game for a couple of years. Its release is perfect timing as many compaines are gearing up to finally do the e-commerce thing, or simply want to revamp systems that are beginning to show some stress and signs of age. This is, of course, not the only e-commerce book you'll ever need---things will change and lets all hope that Vacca does a fifth edition in 2005!
As always, a thorough account November 5, 2003 As usual, John has selected a topic that is of utmost importance to the majority of people and has portrayed a detailed account of E-Commerce.Keep it up, John!
