A great guide for anyone dealing with marriage based immigration! January 2, 2009 When I proposed to my Romanian girlfriend I had no idea what was involved with US immigration. This book became our bible during the six months dealing with the USCIS. We've finally received her temporary green card and I'm happy to put this book on the shelf until we need to file for the permanent GC. Filing for US immigration involves A LOT of paperwork but we did it all without the aid of an attorney. It's a complicated process but this book can guide your way.
Her Books helped me to get my green card. October 26, 2008 I've been following the author's other immigration books and I found there very good material and up to date. Before, we hired immigration lawyer, but it was costly,so I'm trying to find a cheaper altenative. I read eveything, given at least the most informative case scenario which is interesting I just follow what's written before filing and interview do's and dont's and voila! Got my greencard. It's a great relief!
I Used This Book - My Husband Just Got his Green Card June 25, 2008 I used this book when my husband and I were applying for a green card. He was in the country legally as a student when we got married. I had looked at all of the documents from INS, and there were so many of them that I thought I might need an attorney to help me with the process.
I actually spent two days calling immigration attorneys, dealt with being put on hold, being told that they would call me back, and being told that it would be multiple thousands of dollars for them to handle this for me. And, even if I got an attorney to do this, I would still need to be the one to accumulate all of the papers and evidence that the INS requests. I decided to order this book instead and see if I could handle it on my own.
Basically, if you have a decent amount of education and can speak English, you should be able to do this without an attorney. It does take time and effort. This book answered most of the questions that I had. I still had some questions - I still was very careful about reading all of the directions on the forms. The book gave me the confidence to do this on my own. My husband and I had our interview two weeks ago and he just got his green card yesterday. Overall, I thought that the book was well worth the money. I particularly appreciated the checklists.
As for the "immigration attorney" who claims that this book gives bad advice, she is wrong. Her review claims that some people's cases will be delayed if they use the advice of this book: "their case will be delayed by over a year if they follow the advice presented in this book of first filing the relative petition (I-130) and then later after that petition is approved filing the adjustment of status."
The book actually advises that you file the I-130 along with the adjustment of status. That is what I did- and if you are filing both- you should remember to file them at the same time. It does save you time - it is also what is recommended in this book.
You would be crazy not to get this reference!! December 26, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
My husband is from Germany and we 'discovered' one day that he would be in trouble if he married me without a fiance visa and going through the right channels. We were panicked and we found this reference online. With all of the good reviews, we decided to buy it, and it helped us unbelievably! We were able not only to find a better way to go about it, but it provides checklists for the option you choose, explains all of the possible scenarios that you may be in and which route would be right for you, and all the step by step instructions on how to fill out every single form. Do go onto the uscis.gov website for updates addresses for shipping your forms and the current fee information, but rely completely on this book for everything else!! We couldn't have made it without it! It kept us sane in our time of confusion and worry!
Great book- Super helpful!! December 23, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book was so helpful when my now husband and I were going through the process of getting a fiance visa. It helps to explain each step that needs to be taken, which is a huge helps as the BCIS does not offer this information. It gives you tons of information and resources that is a huge help and gives you a sense of ease through the stressful, long and expensive process of immigration. I highly recommend this book- it is worth it for peace of mind! I also found a lot of help from contacting my local representative's immigration department, who helps with finding out the status of your case, has access to immigration phone numbers and also can answer any additional questions that this book doesn't answer.
