1 out of 5 stars Good beginner overview   January 28, 2008

I purchased this book as part of an development project for a new ethernet linked product. I was hoping for some detailed insight into industrial implementations. This book provides a good overview of ethernet but does NOT go into enough detail to be useful for a real world project.

5 out of 5 stars From an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control   July 11, 2006

An essential reference for anyone working in the flour plant of an automated facility. If you are involved with data communication networks, protocols, communication and networking devices, this book is for you.

I have been working for more than 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation, and Process Safety and Control Engineer for the process industries. I own this book, and it has proven to be an excellent reference in my day to day activities.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the industrial network novice   April 25, 2006
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

The authors have created a highly useful book for the automation engineer who has little experience with Ethernet networks. The book is well organized in growing levels of complexity, and filled with details about both Ethernet and Internet protocols usually carried on Ethernet networks. This is a practical book intended for the automation engineer and is not complicated with formulas or mathematical proofs. There is just enough history to let you know where industrial Ethernet came from. They even have capsule coverage of the major automation protocols that run on top of Ethernet.

5 out of 5 stars The best just got better!!!!   December 1, 2005
I reviewed the 1st version of this guide that was released as a pocket guide thought it was great. This version is even better and provides even more info. If you don't have a copy, you should get one. I used the 1st one on a regular basis and now use this edition as my primary reference. Excellent job.

5 out of 5 stars If you can buy only one book on industrial Ethernet application ...   August 16, 2005

this should be it.

It is a Rosetta stone of Ethernet jargon translated into concepts a journeyman field tech can sink their teeth into. One gets the sense Perry Marshall and John Rinaldi have clawed through years of hands-on installation and troubleshooting, and distilled the results into this essential primer.

I'm fairly new to factory-floor Ethernet applications, and was exposed to a lot of useful information - some of it for the first time. In other cases, it cleared up topics I thought I understood, and displaced several misconceptions.

Highly recommended.
